Generally I'm not a fan of experimental novels but 'Wittgenstein's Mistress' is one of those exceptions. So here in Wittgenstein's Mistress we have a woman, in an world empty of people (and, eventually, we learn of all living creatures) writing her life as a signal to whomever might be there, which is, also eventually, no one. Wittgenstein's Mistress by David Markson Dalkey Archive Press, 1988 248 pages / $16.95 buy from Dalkey. Wittgenstein's Mistress is a confounding book. Markson's Wittgenstein's Mistress got a huge plug from David Foster Wallace, but Markson's index-card tetraology of Reader's Block, This is Not a Novel, Vanishing Point, and The Last Novel, are to me, more rereadable. I've taken a few breaks from my NaNoWriMo work to finish this book. In fact I couldn't put it down and in the process I felt more intelligent reading it! November 3, 2012 at 10:05 pm Leave a comment.
